Darius Milhaud (1892-1974): Quatuor à cordes No.1, Op. 5 (1912)
In honor of Milhaud’s three movements, we journey through sunrise, dreams, and sunset. The compositional elements continue throughout all of three paintings' imagined landscapes.
I. Aube Triomphante Sur La Sainte Victoire, inspired by Milhaud: Quartet No. 1, Op. 5, watercolor, 2020, 15 x 22 1/4 The first Painting captures Milhaud’s energetic vibrant music with a triumphant dawn over Mont Sainte-Victoire in Provence, a tribute to Cézanne who painted this beloved scene over 60 times. The River Arc gracefully flows to the countryside pathway where we cross the bridge, traveling to Milhaud’s next magical movement.
II. Voyages de Rêve en Provence, inspired by Milhaud: Quartet No. 1, Op. 5, watercolor, 2020, 15 x 22 1/4 Here the composer’s muted colors are a dream journey of undulating pathways through fields of wildflowers, climbing to a glistening castle on the hill. Swirling, starlit skies illuminate a celestial firmament, and brilliant rushing waters of the Arc crash to the sea below where sparkling sails tenderly drift.
III. La Danse Vibrante du Soleil, inspired by Milhaud: Quartet No. 1, Op. 5, watercolor, 2020, 15 x 22 1/4 Finally the crystal blue sea carries us across to the limestone cliffs of the third movement. A lively folk dance of magnificent color ensues. Vivid light of the setting sun rhythmically flickers across the fields of lavender. Silhouettes of cypress trees and wildflowers gaze at the shimmering spectacle before them swaying gently to the breeze.
